The __sys_sendmsg function in net/socket.c in the Linux kernel before 3.1 allows local users to cause a denial of service (system crash) via crafted use of the sendmmsg system call, leading to an incorrect pointer dereference.
The weakness was disclosed 08/25/2011 as confirmed git commit (GIT Repository). The advisory is shared for download at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2011-4594 since 11/29/2011. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack needs to be approached locally. The successful exploitation needs a simple authentication. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 58275 (CentOS 6 : kernel (CESA-2012:0350)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 350692 (Amazon Linux Security Advisory for kernel: ALAS-2012-055).
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
