The weakness was presented 03/07/2012 by Abhishek Arya (Inferno) with Google Chrome Security Team as HT5190 as confirmed knowledge base article (Website). The advisory is shared for download at support.apple.com. The public release was coordinated in cooperation with the vendor. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2011-2868 since 07/20/2011. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. A authentication is necessary for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a private exploit is available. The current price for an exploit might be approx. USD $0-$5k (estimation calculated on 03/21/2021). It is expected to see the exploit prices for this product increasing in the near future.
A private exploit has been developed by Abhishek Arya (Inferno). It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 58319 (Apple iTunes < 10.6 Multiple Vulnerabilities (credentialed check)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 119974 (Apple iTunes Prior to 10.6 Multiple Vulnerabilities (APPLE-SA-2012-03-07-1)).
Upgrading to version 5.1 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at trac.webkit.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
