VMware Server up to 2.0 Device Driver denial of service

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in VMware Server up to 2.0 (Virtualization Software). It has been rated as problematic. Affected by this issue is an unknown code block of the component Device Driver. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a denial of service vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-404. The product does not release or incorrectly releases a resource before it is made available for re-use. Impacted is availability. CVE summarizes:

Unspecified vulnerability in a guest virtual device driver in VMware Workstation before 5.5.9 build 126128, and 6.5.1 and earlier 6.x versions; VMware Player before 1.0.9 build 126128, and 2.5.1 and earlier 2.x versions; VMware ACE before 1.0.8 build 125922, and 2.5.1 and earlier 2.x versions; VMware Server 1.x before 1.0.8 build 126538 and 2.0.x before 2.0.1 build 156745; VMware Fusion before 2.0.1; VMware ESXi 3.5; and VMware ESX 3.0.2, 3.0.3, and 3.5 allows guest OS users to cause a denial of service (host OS crash) via unknown vectors.

The bug was discovered 04/03/2009. The weakness was presented 04/06/2009 by Laurent Gaffie (Website). The advisory is shared for download at vupen.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2008-4916 since 11/03/2008. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack needs to be approached locally. The requirement for exploitation is a simple authentication. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 3 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 62383 (GLSA-201209-25 : VMware Player, Server, Workstation: Multiple vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Gentoo Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 116348 (VMware Hosted Products, VI Client and Patches for ESX (VMSA-2009-0005 )).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 4 years after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (49699) and Tenable (62383). See 3902, 3957, 41601 and 41600 for similar entries.
