This vulnerability affects the function cli_url_canon of the file libclamav/phishcheck.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Stack-based buffer overflow in the cli_url_canon function in libclamav/phishcheck.c in ClamAV before 0.95.1 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (application crash) and possibly execute arbitrary code via a crafted URL.

The weakness was disclosed 04/09/2009 by Martin (Website). The advisory is shared for download at vupen.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2009-1372 since 04/23/2009. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The current price for an exploit might be approx. USD $0-$5k (estimation calculated on 08/09/2021).

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 36131 (ClamAV < 0.95.1 Multiple Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Misc.. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 116609 (Apple Mac OS X Security Update 2009-005 Not Installed (APPLE-SA-2009-09-10-2)).

Upgrading to version 0.95.1 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (49790) and Tenable (36131). The entries 47871, 47520, 50018 and 50017 are pretty similar.
