Cisco ASA Port Forwarder ActiveX cscopf.ocx Initialization memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in Cisco ASA up to 7.2(5.7)/8.2(5.26)/8.4(3.8)/8.5(1.7)/8.6(1.1) (Firewall Software). Affected is an unknown functionality of the file cscopf.ocx of the component Port Forwarder ActiveX. The manipulation of the argument Initialization with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

Buffer overflow in the Cisco Port Forwarder ActiveX control in cscopf.ocx, as distributed through the Clientless VPN feature on Cisco Adaptive Security Appliances (ASA) 5500 series devices with software 7.0 through 7.2 before 7.2(5.6), 8.0 before 8.0(5.26), 8.1 before 8.1(2.53), 8.2 before 8.2(5.18), 8.3 before 8.3(2.28), 8.2 before 8.4(2.16), and 8.6 before 8.6(1.1), allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via unspecified vectors, aka Bug ID CSCtr00165.

The weakness was shared 03/14/2012 by Will Dormann as cisco-sa-20120314-asaclient as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared for download at tools.cisco.com. The vendor cooperated in the coordination of the public release. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2012-0358 since 01/04/2012. The exploitability is told to be difficult. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Technical details and a private exploit are known. The current price for an exploit might be approx. USD $0-$5k (estimation calculated on 03/21/2021).

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 272 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 58512 (Cisco AnyConnect Portforwarder ActiveX Control Initialization Parameter Parsing Buffer Overflow), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows.

Upgrading to version 7.2(5.7), 8.2(5.26), 8.4(3.8), 8.5(1.7) or 8.6(1.1) eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at Tenable (58512). The entries 4827, 4826, 4825 and 4823 are related to this item.
