Apple QuickTime before 7.6.2 does not properly initialize memory before use in handling movie files, which allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code or cause a denial of service (application crash) via a movie containing a user data atom of size zero.

The weakness was presented 06/02/2009 by Lurene Grenier with Sourcefire (Website). The advisory is available at vupen.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2009-0956 since 03/18/2009. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 38989 (QuickTime < 7.6.2 Multiple Vulnerabilities (Mac OS X)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family MacOS X Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 116443 (Apple QuickTime 7.6.2 Not Installed).

Upgrading to version 7.5.5 eliminates this vulnerability.
