The weakness was published 03/21/2012 by Sergey Glazunov (PinkiePie) with VUPEN (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at googlechromereleases.blogspot.com. The public release has been coordinated with Google. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2011-3056 since 08/09/2011. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a private exploit is available.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 58438 (FreeBSD : chromium -- multiple vulnerabilities (330106da-7406-11e1-a1d7-00262d5ed8ee)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family FreeBSD Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 120217 (Apple Safari Multiple Vulnerabilities (APPLE-SA-2012-05-09-2)).

Upgrading to version 17.0.963.83 eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at chrome.google.com. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at trac.webkit.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
