Squid 3.0 through 3.0.STABLE16 and 3.1 through 3.1.0.11 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service via malformed requests including (1) "missing or mismatched protocol identifier," (2) missing or negative status value," (3) "missing version," or (4) "missing or invalid status number," related to (a) HttpMsg.cc and (b) HttpReply.cc.

The weakness was presented 07/28/2009 by Rob Middleton with Codenomicon (Website). The advisory is available at squid-cache.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2009-2622 since 07/28/2009. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit. The structure of the vulnerability defines a possible price range of USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 08/13/2021).

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 40627 (Fedora 11 : squid-3.0.STABLE18-1.fc11 (2009-8324)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Fedora Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 116562 (Fedora Update for Squid (FEDORA-2009-8324, FEDORA-2009-8327)).

There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 8677.
