The js_watch_set function in js/src/jsdbgapi.cpp in the JavaScript engine in Mozilla Firefox before 3.0.12 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (assertion failure and application exit) or possibly execute arbitrary code via a crafted .js file, related to a "memory safety bug." NOTE: this was originally reported as affecting versions before 3.0.13.

The weakness was presented 08/04/2009 by Bob Clary (Website). The advisory is available at vupen.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2009-2664. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 43769 (CentOS 5 : firefox (CESA-2009:1162)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 165656 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update Mozilla Firefox (SUSE-SA:2009:048)).

Upgrading to version 2.0 8 eliminates this vulnerability.
