The weakness was disclosed 09/08/2009 (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at us-cert.gov. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2009-2499 since 07/17/2009. The attack can be launched remotely. Required for exploitation is a single authentication. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1059 according to MITRE ATT&CK.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 40890 (MS09-047: Vulnerabilities in Windows Media Format Could Allow Remote Code Execution (973812)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 90524 (Microsoft Windows Media Format Remote Code Execution Vulnerability (MS09-047)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 8440.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (52774) and Tenable (40890). The entries 4028 and 49866 are pretty similar.
