Red Hat RPM Package Manager 4.9.1.2 Header Region Size lib/header.c headerLoad input validation

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in Red Hat RPM Package Manager 4.9.1.2. It has been rated as critical. This issue affects the function headerLoad in the library lib/header.c of the component Header Region Size Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the properties that are required to process the data safely and correctly. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

The headerLoad function in lib/header.c in RPM before 4.9.1.3 does not properly validate region tags, which allows user-assisted remote attackers to cause a denial of service (crash) and possibly execute arbitrary code via a large region size in a package header.

The weakness was shared 04/03/2012 by Ramon de C Valle as confirmed mailinglist post (oss-sec). It is possible to read the advisory at openwall.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2012-0061 since 12/07/2011. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 69668 (Amazon Linux AMI : rpm (ALAS-2012-61)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Amazon Linux Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 195322 (Ubuntu Security Notification for Rpm Vulnerabilities (USN-1695-1)).

Upgrading to version 4.9.1.3 eliminates this vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (74583), Tenable (69668), SecurityFocus (BID 52865†), OSVDB (81011†) and Secunia (SA48716†).
