Blender 2.34/2.35a/2.40/2.49b code injection

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in Blender 2.34/2.35a/2.40/2.49b. It has been declared as very critical. This vulnerability affects an unknown function. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a code injection vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-94. The product constructs all or part of a code segment using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the syntax or behavior of the intended code segment. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

Blender 2.34, 2.35a, 2.40, and 2.49b allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a .blend file that contains Python statements in the onLoad action of a ScriptLink SDNA.

The weakness was disclosed 11/06/2009 by Core Security (Basti) with CORE Security Technologies (Website). The advisory is available at securityfocus.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2009-3850. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. The structure of the vulnerability defines a possible price range of USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 01/05/2025). This vulnerability is assigned to T1059 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.

A public exploit has been developed by Core Security and been published even before and not after the advisory. It is possible to download the exploit at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 55579 (Fedora 15 : blender-2.49b-16.fc15 (2011-8424)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Fedora Local Security Checks.

There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (54177), Exploit-DB (9843), Tenable (55579), SecurityFocus (BID 36838†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-32285†).
