A vulnerability has been found in MySQL (Database Software) and classified as critical. This vulnerability affects the function vio_verify_callback
of the file viosslfactories.c of the component Certificates. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does
not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the
properties that are required to process the data safely and
correctly. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
The vio_verify_callback function in viosslfactories.c in MySQL 5.0.x before 5.0.88 and 5.1.x before 5.1.41, when OpenSSL is used, accepts a value of zero for the depth of X.509 certificates, which allows man-in-the-middle attackers to spoof arbitrary SSL-based MySQL servers via a crafted certificate, as demonstrated by a certificate presented by a server linked against the yaSSL library.
The weakness was disclosed 11/30/2009 (Website). The advisory is available at vupen.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2009-4028. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 44948 (CentOS 5 : mysql (CESA-2010:0109)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 155704 (Oracle Enterprise Linux Update for MySQL (ELSA-2010-0109)).
Upgrading to version 5.0.0.0 eliminates this vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (44948) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-24293†). The entries VDB-50963, VDB-50961, VDB-52996 and VDB-52995 are pretty similar. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
