Panda ActiveScan 2.0 ActiveX Control as2guiie.cab code injection

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in Panda ActiveScan 2.0. It has been rated as very critical. Affected by this issue is an unknown code block in the library as2stubie.dll of the file as2guiie.cab of the component ActiveX Control. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a code injection vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-94. The product constructs all or part of a code segment using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the syntax or behavior of the intended code segment. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

The ActiveScan Installer ActiveX control in as2stubie.dll before 1.3.3.0 in PandaActiveScan Installer 2.0 in Panda ActiveScan downloads software in an as2guiie.cab archive located at an arbitrary URL, and does not verify the archive s digital signature before installation, which allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a URL argument to an unspecified method.

The weakness was disclosed 02/11/2010 by Will Dormann with CERT/CC as confirmed advisory (CERT.org). The advisory is shared for download at kb.cert.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2009-3735. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The current price for an exploit might be approx. USD $0-$5k (estimation calculated on 09/02/2021). The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1059.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 44418 (MS10-008: Cumulative Security Update of ActiveX Kill Bits (978262)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins.

Upgrading to version 2.0 eliminates this vulnerability.
