The futex_lock_pi function in kernel/futex.c in the Linux kernel before 2.6.33-rc7 does not properly manage a certain reference count, which allows local users to cause a denial of service (OOPS) via vectors involving an unmount of an ext3 filesystem.
The issue has been introduced in 03/20/2006. The weakness was disclosed 02/15/2010 (Website). The advisory is shared at kernel.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2010-0623. The exploitation is known to be easy. An attack has to be approached locally. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1428 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 48181 (Mandriva Linux Security Advisory : kernel (MDVSA-2010:088)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Mandriva Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 166481 (OpenSuSE Security Update for update kernel to 3.0 (openSUSE-SU-2013:0927-1)).
