Sun OpenOffice up to 3.1.1 Table Property code injection

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in Sun OpenOffice up to 3.1.1 (Office Suite Software) and classified as critical. This issue affects an unknown function of the component Table Property. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a code injection vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-94. The product constructs all or part of a code segment using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the syntax or behavior of the intended code segment. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

filter/ww8/ww8par2.cxx in OpenOffice.org (OOo) before 3.2 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (application crash) or possibly execute arbitrary code via a crafted sprmTSetBrc table property modifier in a Word document, related to a "boundary error flaw."

The weakness was presented 02/16/2010 by Sebastian Apelt with VUPEN (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at us-cert.gov. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2009-3302 since 09/22/2009. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1059 according to MITRE ATT&CK.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 44598 (CentOS 3 / 4 / 5 : openoffice.org (CESA-2010:0101)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 165587 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update OpenOffice.org (SUSE-SA:2010:017)).

Upgrading to version 1.1.0 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 1 days after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (56241) and Tenable (44598). See 42035, 42034, 42033 and 42032 for similar entries.
