Oracle GlassFish Enterprise Server Web Container input validation

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in Oracle GlassFish Enterprise Server (Application Server Software) (version now known). It has been declared as problematic. This vulnerability affects some unknown processing of the component Web Container. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the properties that are required to process the data safely and correctly. As an impact it is known to affect availability. CVE summarizes:

Oracle Glassfish 2.1.1, 3.0.1, and 3.1.1, as used in Communications Server 2.0, Sun Java System Application Server 8.1 and 8.2, and possibly other products, computes hash values for form parameters without restricting the ability to trigger hash collisions predictably, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (CPU consumption) by sending many crafted parameters, aka Oracle security ticket S0104869.

The weakness was published 01/17/2012 by Alexander Klink with n.runs AG (Website). The advisory is shared for download at oracle.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2011-5035 since 12/29/2011. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.

It is possible to download the exploit at securityfocus.com. It is declared as highly functional. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 58090 (Oracle GlassFish Server 2.1.1 < 2.1.1.15 / 3.0.1 < 3.0.1.5 / 3.1.1 < 3.1.1.2 Hash Collision DoS), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Web Servers and running in the context r. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 185006 (HP-UX Running Java Remote Unauthorized Access Vulnerability (HPSBUX02784)).

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at oracle.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (58090) and Exploit-DB (18305). Similar entries are available at 4564, 4560, 4566 and 4559.
