The weakness was released 03/10/2010 by iDefense Labs with VeriSign iDefense Labs (Website). The advisory is available at us-cert.gov. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2010-0261. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available. The structure of the vulnerability defines a possible price range of USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 09/05/2021).
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 45021 (MS10-017: Vulnerabilities in Microsoft Office Excel Could Allow Remote Code Execution (980150)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 110104 (Microsoft Excel Remote Code Execution Vulnerability (MS10-017)).
