A vulnerability has been found in Stafford.uklinux libESMTP and classified as critical. This vulnerability affects the function match_component of the file smtp-tls.c of the component Certificates. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a cryptographic issue vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-310. The match_component function in smtp-tls.c in libESMTP 1.0.3.r1, and possibly other versions including 1.0.4, treats two strings as equal if one is a substring of the other, which allows remote attackers to spoof trusted certificates via a crafted subjectAltName.
The weakness was disclosed 03/31/2010 by Martin (Website). The advisory is shared for download at bugs.debian.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2010-1194. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1600.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 49742 (Mandriva Linux Security Advisory : libesmtp (MDVSA-2010:195)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Mandriva Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 165222 (SUSE Security Update for Multiple Packages (SUSE-SR:2010:011)).
There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
