Linux Kernel 2.6.28.2 resource management

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a resource management vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-399. As an impact it is known to affect availability. CVE summarizes:

The ULE decapsulation functionality in drivers/media/dvb/dvb-core/dvb_net.c in dvb-core in Linux kernel 2.6.33 and earlier allows attackers to cause a denial of service (infinite loop) via a crafted MPEG2-TS frame, related to an invalid Payload Pointer ULE.

The issue has been introduced in 12/25/2008. The weakness was presented 04/06/2010 by Ang Way Chuang as Bug 569237 as not defined bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is available at bugzilla.redhat.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2010-1086. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available. The structure of the vulnerability defines a possible price range of USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 09/07/2021).

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 467 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 46256 (CentOS 4 : kernel (CESA-2010:0394)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 165591 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update Linux Kernel (SUSE-SA:2010:023)).

There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (56660) and Tenable (46256). See 51918, 51485, 52620 and 52617 for similar entries.
