Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in PHP up to 5.3.2 (Programming Language Software). This affects an unknown code block. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a code injection vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-94. The product constructs all or part of a code segment using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the syntax or behavior of the intended code segment. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
The (1) sqlite_single_query and (2) sqlite_array_query functions in ext/sqlite/sqlite.c in PHP 5.2 through 5.2.13 and 5.3 through 5.3.2 allow context-dependent attackers to execute arbitrary code by calling these functions with an empty SQL query, which triggers access of uninitialized memory.
The weakness was released 05/07/2010 by Mateusz Kocielski (Website). The advisory is shared at php-security.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2010-1868. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1059 for this issue.
The exploit is shared for download at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 56459 (GLSA-201110-06 : PHP: Multiple vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Gentoo Local Security Checks.
There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (58473), Tenable (56459), SecurityFocus (BID 40013†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-27290†). Entries connected to this vulnerability are available at VDB-53487, VDB-53395, VDB-53394 and VDB-53391. Statistical analysis made it clear that VulDB provides the best quality for vulnerability data.
