Microsoft Excel 2003 SP3, 2007 SP2 and SP3, and 2010 Gold and SP1; Office 2011 for Mac; Excel Viewer; and Office Compatibility Pack SP2 and SP3 do not properly handle memory during the opening of files, which allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a crafted spreadsheet, aka "Excel File Format Memory Corruption Vulnerability."

The weakness was released 05/08/2012 by Omair as MS12-030 as confirmed knowledge base article (Website) via Microsoft. The advisory is available at technet.microsoft.com. The public release was coordinated with the vendor. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2012-0141 since 12/13/2011. Local access is required to approach this attack. The requirement for exploitation is a authentication. Technical details are unknown but a private exploit is available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 59046 (MS12-029 / MS12-030: Vulnerabilities in Microsoft Office Could Allow Remote Code Execution (2680352 / 2663830) (Mac OS X)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family MacOS X Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 110160 (Microsoft Office Remote Code Execution Vulnerability (MS12-030)).

Applying the patch MS12-030 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at technet.microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 12310.
