yum-rhn-plugin in Red Hat Network Client Tools (aka rhn-client-tools) on Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) 5 and Fedora uses world-readable permissions for the /var/spool/up2date/loginAuth.pkl file, which allows local users to access the Red Hat Network profile, and possibly prevent future security updates, by leveraging authentication data from this file.

The weakness was shared 06/02/2010 with Red Hat as Bug 585386 as confirmed bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is shared for download at bugzilla.redhat.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2010-1439 since 04/15/2010. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack needs to be approached locally. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1068.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 46780 (RHEL 5 : rhn-client-tools (RHSA-2010:0449)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Red Hat Local Security Checks.
