Samba up to 3.2.12 process.c chain_reply memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in Samba up to 3.2.12 (File Transfer Software). It has been declared as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is the function chain_reply of the file process.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

Buffer overflow in the SMB1 packet chaining implementation in the chain_reply function in process.c in smbd in Samba 3.0.x before 3.3.13 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (memory corruption and daemon crash) or possibly execute arbitrary code via a crafted field in a packet.

The weakness was released 06/16/2010 by iDefense Labs with iDEFENSE Labs (Website). The advisory is shared at samba.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2010-2063. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.

It is declared as highly functional. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 68051 (Oracle Linux 3 / 4 / 5 : samba / samba3x (ELSA-2010-0488)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Oracle Linux Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 216027 (VMware ESX 4.0 Third Party Updates for Service Console (VMSA-2010-0013)).

Upgrading to version 3.2.13 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 10777.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (59481) and Tenable (68051).
