A vulnerability was found in Vladislav Bolkhovitin Generic SCSI Target Subsystem up to 0.9.4. It has been rated as critical. This issue affects an unknown function of the file isns.c of the component Subsystem. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is availability. The summary by CVE is:
Multiple buffer overflows in the iSNS implementation in isns.c in (1) Linux SCSI target framework (aka tgt or scsi-target-utils) before 1.0.6, (2) iSCSI Enterprise Target (aka iscsitarget or IET) 1.4.20.1 and earlier, and (3) Generic SCSI Target Subsystem for Linux (aka SCST or iscsi-scst) 1.0.1.1 and earlier allow remote attackers to cause a denial of service (memory corruption and daemon crash) or possibly execute arbitrary code via (a) a long iSCSI Name string in an SCN message or (b) an invalid PDU.
The weakness was presented 07/01/2010 with TELUS Security Labs Vulnerability Research Team as Bug 593877 as not defined bug report (Bugzilla). It is possible to read the advisory at bugzilla.redhat.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2010-2221. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 68058 (Oracle Linux 5 : scsi-target-utils (ELSA-2010-0518)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Oracle Linux Local Security Checks.
A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 10676.
