Uzbl 2009.12.22/2010.01.04/2010.04.03 Default Configuration HREF code injection

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in Uzbl 2009.12.22/2010.01.04/2010.04.03. This affects some unknown processing of the component Default Configuration. The manipulation of the argument HREF with an unknown input leads to a code injection vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-94. The product constructs all or part of a code segment using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the syntax or behavior of the intended code segment. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

The default configuration of the <Button2> binding in Uzbl before 2010.08.05 does not properly use the @SELECTED_URI feature, which allows user-assisted remote attackers to execute arbitrary commands via a crafted HREF attribute of an A element in an HTML document.

The weakness was disclosed 08/19/2010 (Website). The advisory is shared at uzbl.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2010-2809. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details and a public exploit are known. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1059 for this issue.

The exploit is shared for download at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 48388 (Fedora 13 : uzbl-0-0.16.20100626gitafc0f873e.fc13 (2010-12260)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Fedora Local Security Checks.

Upgrading to version 2010.04.03 eliminates this vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (61011) and Tenable (48388).
