Sony VAIO up to 3.0 Wireless Manager WifiMan.dll String memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in Sony VAIO up to 3.0 and classified as critical. Affected by this issue is an unknown functionality in the library WifiMan.dll of the component Wireless Manager. The manipulation of the argument String as part of a HTML Page leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

Multiple buffer overflows in the Wireless Manager ActiveX control 4.0.0.0 in WifiMan.dll in Sony VAIO PC Wireless LAN Wizard 1.0; VAIO Wireless Wizard 1.00, 1.00_64, 1.0.1, 2.0, and 3.0; SmartWi Connection Utility 4.7, 4.7.4, 4.8, 4.9, 4.10, and 4.11; and VAIO Easy Connect software 1.0.0 and 1.1.0 allow remote attackers to cause a denial of service (crash) and possibly execute arbitrary code via a long string in the second argument of the (1) SetTmpProfileOption or (2) ConnectToNetwork method.

The weakness was presented 05/30/2012 by High-Tech Bridge SA with High-Tech Bridge SA as HTB23063 (Website). The advisory is shared for download at esupport.sony.com. The public release was coordinated in cooperation with the vendor. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2012-0985 since 02/02/2012. The attack may be launched remotely. The successful exploitation needs a simple authentication. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known.

A public exploit has been developed by High-Tech Bridge SA and been published immediately after the advisory. The exploit is available at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 44 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 60109 (Sony VAIO Wireless Manager ActiveX Control WifiMan.dll Multiple Buffer Overflows), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows.

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (75978), Tenable (60109) and Exploit-DB (18958).
