Microsoft Excel 2002 SP3 and 2007 SP2; Excel Viewer SP2; and Office Compatibility Pack for Word, Excel, and PowerPoint 2007 File Formats SP2 do not properly validate record information, which allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a crafted Excel document, aka "Real Time Data Array Record Vulnerability."
The issue has been introduced in 01/30/2007. The weakness was presented 10/13/2010 with VUPEN (Website). The advisory is shared at us-cert.gov. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2010-3240. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. The price for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 09/26/2021).
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1352 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 49957 (MS10-080: Vulnerabilities in Microsoft Excel Could Allow Remote Code Execution (2293211)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 110136 (Microsoft Office Excel Remote Code Execution Vulnerabilities (MS10-080)).
There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 10545.
