Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 through 8 does not properly handle objects in memory in certain circumstances involving use of Microsoft Word to read Word documents, which allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code by accessing an object that (1) was not properly initialized or (2) is deleted, leading to memory corruption, aka "Uninitialized Memory Corruption Vulnerability."
The issue has been introduced in 03/05/2008. The weakness was disclosed 10/13/2010 as MS10-071 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). The advisory is available at technet.microsoft.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2010-3331. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available. This vulnerability is assigned to T1059 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 952 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 49948 , which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 100091 (Microsoft Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer (MS10-071)).
Applying the patch MS10-071 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at technet.microsoft.com. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 10531.
The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at Tenable (49948). The entries 4172, 4197, 55001 and 55000 are pretty similar.
