Microsoft Internet Explorer 8/9 HTML Sanitization toStaticHTML String information disclosure

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in Microsoft Internet Explorer 8/9 (Web Browser). It has been classified as problematic. Affected is the function toStaticHTML of the component HTML Sanitization. The manipulation as part of a String leads to a information disclosure vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-200. The product exposes sensitive information to an actor that is not explicitly authorized to have access to that information. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality. CVE summarizes:

The toStaticHTML API (aka the SafeHTML component) in Microsoft Internet Explorer 8 and 9, Communicator 2007 R2, and Lync 2010 and 2010 Attendee does not properly handle event attributes and script, which makes it easier for remote attackers to conduct cross-site scripting (XSS) attacks via a crafted HTML document, aka "HTML Sanitization Vulnerability."

The issue has been introduced in 03/05/2008. The weakness was disclosed 06/12/2012 by Adi Cohen with IBM Rational Application Security as MS12-037 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). The advisory is shared for download at technet.microsoft.com. The public release has been coordinated in cooperation with the vendor. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2012-1858 since 03/22/2012. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. A authentication is required for exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. Technical details and a public exploit are known. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1592.

A public exploit has been developed by Adi Cohen and been published 2 months after the advisory. The exploit is shared for download at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1560 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 59913 (MS12-050: Vulnerabilities in SharePoint Could Allow Elevation of Privilege (2695502)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 110185 (Microsoft SharePoint Privilege Escalation Vulnerability (MS12-050)).

Applying the patch MS12-037 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at technet.microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 12436.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (75963), Exploit-DB (19777), Tenable (59913), SecurityFocus (BID 53842†) and OSVDB (82861†).
