A vulnerability was found in Microsoft Internet Explorer 8/9 (Web Browser). It has been classified as problematic. Affected is the function toStaticHTML

The toStaticHTML API (aka the SafeHTML component) in Microsoft Internet Explorer 8 and 9, Communicator 2007 R2, and Lync 2010 and 2010 Attendee does not properly handle event attributes and script, which makes it easier for remote attackers to conduct cross-site scripting (XSS) attacks via a crafted HTML document, aka "HTML Sanitization Vulnerability."
The issue has been introduced in 03/05/2008. The weakness was disclosed 06/12/2012 by Adi Cohen with IBM Rational Application Security as MS12-037 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). The advisory is shared for download at technet.microsoft.com. The public release has been coordinated in cooperation with the vendor. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2012-1858 since 03/22/2012. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. A authentication is required for exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. Technical details and a public exploit are known. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1592.
A public exploit has been developed by Adi Cohen and been published 2 months after the advisory. The exploit is shared for download at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1560 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 59913 (MS12-050: Vulnerabilities in SharePoint Could Allow Elevation of Privilege (2695502)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 110185 (Microsoft SharePoint Privilege Escalation Vulnerability (MS12-050)).
Applying the patch MS12-037 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at technet.microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 12436.
