Linux Kernel 2.6.16.9 resource management

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a resource management vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-399. Impacted is availability. CVE summarizes:

The KVM implementation in the Linux kernel before 2.6.36 does not properly reload the FS and GS segment registers, which allows host OS users to cause a denial of service (host OS crash) via a KVM_RUN ioctl call in conjunction with a modified Local Descriptor Table (LDT).

The issue has been introduced in 03/20/2006. The weakness was presented 11/26/2010 (Website). The advisory is available at kernel.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2010-3698. The exploitation is known to be easy. Local access is required to approach this attack. The successful exploitation requires a simple authentication. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1712 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 68148 (Oracle Linux 5 : kvm (ELSA-2010-0898)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Oracle Linux Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 155569 (Oracle Linux 5 Unbreakable Enterprise Kernel Security and Bug Fix Update (ELSA-2010-2011)).

There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.

The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at Tenable (68148). See 4176, 55542, 55535 and 55526 for similar entries.
