net/ipv4/inet_diag.c in the Linux kernel before 2.6.37-rc2 does not properly audit INET_DIAG bytecode, which allows local users to cause a denial of service (kernel infinite loop) via crafted INET_DIAG_REQ_BYTECODE instructions in a netlink message that contains multiple attribute elements, as demonstrated by INET_DIAG_BC_JMP instructions.

The issue has been introduced in 03/20/2006. The weakness was published 12/10/2010 (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at spinics.net. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2010-3880 since 10/08/2010. The exploitation is known to be easy. Attacking locally is a requirement. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1726 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 75557 (openSUSE Security Update : kernel (openSUSE-SU-2012:0206-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 165558 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update Linux Kernel (SUSE-SA:2011:019)).
