The VPN downloader implementation in the WebLaunch feature in Cisco AnyConnect Secure Mobility Client 2.x before 2.5 MR6 on Windows, and 2.x before 2.5 MR6 and 3.x before 3.0 MR8 on Mac OS X and Linux, does not properly validate binaries that are received by the downloader process, which allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via vectors involving (1) ActiveX or (2) Java components, aka Bug ID CSCtw47523.

The weakness was disclosed 06/20/2012 by Cisco with gwslabs.com as cisco-sa-20120620-ac as confirmed bulletin (Website) via ZDI (Zero Day Initiative). The advisory is shared at tools.cisco.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2012-2493 since 05/07/2012. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. The requirement for exploitation is a authentication. Technical details and a private exploit are known.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 59820 (Cisco AnyConnect Secure Mobility Client VPN Downloader RCE (cisco-sa-20120620-ac)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 120296 (Cisco AnyConnect Secure Mobility Client Multiple Vulnerabilities).
