The cu_rrd_create_file function (src/utils_rrdcreate.c) in collectd 4.x before 4.9.4 and before 4.10.2 allow remote attackers to cause a denial of service (assertion failure) via a packet with a timestamp whose value is 10 or less, as demonstrated by creating RRD files using the (1) RRDtool and (2) RRDCacheD plugins.
The weakness was shared 12/17/2010 (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at vupen.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2010-4336 since 11/30/2010. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 51429 (Fedora 14 : collectd-4.9.4-1.fc14 (2010-19031)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Fedora Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 165191 (SUSE Security Update for Multiple Packages (SUSE-SR:2011:009)).
Upgrading to version 4.7.3 eliminates this vulnerability.
