Google Chrome up to 8.0.552.208 vorbis_dec.c memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability classified as very critical has been found in Google Chrome up to 8.0.552.208 (Web Browser). Affected is an unknown function of the file vorbis_dec.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

Multiple buffer overflows in vorbis_dec.c in the Vorbis decoder in FFmpeg, as used in Google Chrome before 8.0.552.237 and Chrome OS before 8.0.552.344, allow remote attackers to cause a denial of service (memory corruption and application crash) or possibly have unspecified other impact via a crafted WebM file, related to buffers for (1) the channel floor and (2) the channel residue.

The weakness was published 01/12/2011 by Sergey Glazunov (SkyLined) with Chromium Development Community as 68115 (Website). The advisory is available at code.google.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2011-0480. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit. The structure of the vulnerability defines a possible price range of USD $5k-$25k at the moment (estimation calculated on 10/12/2021). It is expected to see the exploit prices for this product increasing in the near future.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 56144 (Debian DSA-2306-1 : ffmpeg - several vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 118908 (Google Chrome Prior to 8.0.552.237 Multiple Vulnerabilities).

Upgrading to version 8.0.552.209 eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at chrome.google.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 11301.

The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at Tenable (56144). Similar entries are available at 56075, 56074, 56073 and 56072.
