Ipswitch WS_FTP Server 4.0.2 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (disk consumption) and bypass file size restrictions via a REST command with a large size argument, followed by a STOR of a smaller file.

The bug was discovered 05/24/2004. The weakness was presented 03/15/2004 by John Layman as confirmed posting (Bugtraq). It is possible to read the advisory at securityfocus.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2004-1848 since 05/04/2005. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.

The exploit is available at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 14598 (WS_FTP Server Multiple Vulnerabilities (OF, DoS, Cmd Exec)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family FTP and running in the context r. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 27236 (Ipswitch WS_FTP Multiple Vulnerabilities).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at ipswitch.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
