NCSA MyProxy 5.0/5.1/5.2 input validation

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in NCSA MyProxy 5.0/5.1/5.2 (Firewall Software). Affected by this issue is an unknown code block. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the properties that are required to process the data safely and correctly. Impacted is integrity. CVE summarizes:

MyProxy 5.0 through 5.2, as used in Globus Toolkit 5.0.0 through 5.0.2, does not properly verify the (1) hostname or (2) identity in the X.509 certificate for the myproxy-server, which allows remote attackers to spoof the server and conduct man-in-the-middle (MITM) attacks via a crafted certificate when executing (a) myproxy-logon or (b) myproxy-get-delegation.

The weakness was released 01/19/2011 (Website). The advisory is available at lists.globus.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2011-0738 since 02/01/2011. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 51678 (Fedora 13 : myproxy-5.3-1.fc13 (2011-0512)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Fedora Local Security Checks and running in the context l.

It is possible to mitigate the problem by adding an authentication mechanism. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (64830) and Tenable (51678).
