Microsoft Visio 2002/2003/2007 Exception ORMELEMS.DLL code injection

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability classified as very critical was found in Microsoft Visio 2002/2003/2007 (Image Processing Software). Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown function in the library ORMELEMS.DLL of the component Exception Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a code injection vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-94. The product constructs all or part of a code segment using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the syntax or behavior of the intended code segment. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

The LZW stream decompression functionality in ORMELEMS.DLL in Microsoft Visio 2002 SP2, 2003 SP3, and 2007 SP2 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a Visio file with a malformed VisioDocument stream that triggers an exception handler that accesses an object that has not been fully initialized, which triggers memory corruption, aka "Visio Object Memory Corruption Vulnerability."

The weakness was presented 02/08/2011 by Xin Ouyang with Palo Alto Networks as MS11-008 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). The advisory is shared at microsoft.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2011-0092. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. The price for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 10/16/2021). MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1059 for this issue.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 51908 (MS11-008: Vulnerabilities in Microsoft Visio Could Allow Remote Code Execution (2451879)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 110142 (Microsoft Office Visio Remote Code Execution Vulnerability (MS11-008)).

Applying the patch MS11-008 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (64925) and Tenable (51908). See 56414 for similar entry.
