The qcms_transform_data_rgb_out_lut_sse2 function in the QCMS implementation in Mozilla Firefox 4.x through 13.0, Thunderbird 5.0 through 13.0, and SeaMonkey before 2.11 might allow remote attackers to obtain sensitive information from process memory via a crafted color profile that triggers an out-of-bounds read operation.
The weakness was presented 07/17/2012 by Tony Payne (moz_bug_r_a4) with Google Inc. as MFSA 2012-50 as confirmed advisory (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at mozilla.org. The public release was coordinated in cooperation with Mozilla. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2012-1960 since 03/30/2012. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details and also a private exploit are known. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1592 according to MITRE ATT&CK.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 80609 (Oracle Solaris Third-Party Patch Update : firefox (multiple_vulnerabilities_in_firefox)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Solaris Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 121143 (Solaris 11.1 Support Repository Update (SRU) 2.5 Missing).
Upgrading to version 14 eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at mozilla.org. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
