A vulnerability was found in Mozilla Firefox (Web Browser). It has been declared as critical. This vulnerability affects some unknown functionality of the component JavaScript SandBox Utility. The manipulation as part of a javascript: URL leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

Mozilla Firefox 4.x through 13.0, Firefox ESR 10.x before 10.0.6, Thunderbird 5.0 through 13.0, Thunderbird ESR 10.x before 10.0.6, and SeaMonkey before 2.11 do not properly implement the JavaScript sandbox utility, which allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary JavaScript code with improper privileges via a javascript: URL.

The weakness was released 07/17/2012 by Karthikeyan Bhargavan (moz_bug_r_a4) with Mozilla Corporation as MFSA 2012-56 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is available at mozilla.org. The public release was coordinated with the vendor. This vulnerability was named CVE-2012-1967 since 03/30/2012. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. Technical details are unknown but a private exploit is available. The structure of the vulnerability defines a possible price range of USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 03/26/2021).

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 59998 (CentOS 5 / 6 : firefox (CESA-2012:1088)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 120366 (Red Hat Update for Xulrunner Firefox (RHSA-2012:1088)).

Upgrading to version 14 eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at mozilla.org. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
