The Debian GNU/Linux /etc/cron.d/php5 cron job for PHP 5.3.5 allows local users to delete arbitrary files via a symlink attack on a directory under /var/lib/php5/.

The weakness was presented 03/29/2011 by Stephane Chazelas as confirmed git commit (GIT Repository). The advisory is available at git.debian.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2011-0441. Local access is required to approach this attack. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 53348 (Mandriva Linux Security Advisory : php (MDVSA-2011:069)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Mandriva Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 195115 (Ubuntu Security Notification for php5 Vulnerabilities (USN-1358-2)).

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.debian.org.
