Digium Asterisk up to 1.6.1.18 tcptls.c null pointer dereference

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in Digium Asterisk up to 1.6.1.18 (Communications System). It has been rated as problematic. Affected by this issue is an unknown code block of the file tcptls.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a null pointer dereference vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-476. A NULL pointer dereference occurs when the application dereferences a pointer that it expects to be valid, but is NULL, typically causing a crash or exit. Impacted is availability. CVE summarizes:

tcptls.c in the TCP/TLS server in Asterisk Open Source 1.6.1.x before 1.6.1.23, 1.6.2.x before 1.6.2.17.1, and 1.8.x before 1.8.3.1 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (NULL pointer dereference and daemon crash) by establishing many short TCP sessions to services that use a certain TLS API.

The weakness was presented 03/31/2011 (oss-sec). The advisory is available at openwall.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2011-1175 since 03/03/2011. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 52714 (Asterisk Multiple Denial of Service Vulnerabilities (AST-2011-003 / AST-2011-004)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Denial of Service.

Upgrading to version 1.6.1.19 eliminates this vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (66140) and Tenable (52714). See 56977 for similar entry.
