Multiple off-by-one errors in the ext4 subsystem in the Linux kernel before 3.0-rc5 allow local users to cause a denial of service (BUG_ON and system crash) by accessing a sparse file in extent format with a write operation involving a block number corresponding to the largest possible 32-bit unsigned integer.
The issue has been introduced in 03/20/2006. The weakness was disclosed 07/28/2011 as Bug 722557 as not defined bug report (Bugzilla). It is possible to read the advisory at bugzilla.redhat.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2011-2695. The exploitation is known to be easy. Attacking locally is a requirement. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1956 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 56569 (CentOS 5 : kernel (CESA-2011:1386)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 195236 (Ubuntu Security Notification for Linux-ec2 Vulnerabilities (USN-1239-1)).
