The (1) ZipArchive::addGlob and (2) ZipArchive::addPattern functions in ext/zip/php_zip.c in PHP 5.3.6 allow context-dependent attackers to cause a denial of service (application crash) via certain flags arguments, as demonstrated by (a) GLOB_ALTDIRFUNC and (b) GLOB_APPEND.

The weakness was released 08/25/2011 by Maksymilian Arciemowicz (oss-sec). The advisory is available at openwall.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2011-1657. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit. The structure of the vulnerability defines a possible price range of USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 11/18/2021).

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 57925 (Debian DSA-2408-1 : php5 - several vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 195245 (Ubuntu Security Notification for Php5 Vulnerabilities (USN-1231-1)).
