Apple Mac OS X prior 10.7.0 CoreStorage cryptographic issues

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability classified as problematic was found in Apple Mac OS X (Operating System). Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown part of the component CoreStorage. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a cryptographic issues vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-310. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality. The summary by CVE is:

CoreStorage in Apple Mac OS X 10.7 before 10.7.2 does not ensure that all disk data is encrypted during the enabling of FileVault, which makes it easier for physically proximate attackers to obtain sensitive information by reading directly from the disk device.

The weakness was released 10/14/2011 by Erling Ellingsen with Facebook (Website). The advisory is shared at lists.apple.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2011-3212. The exploitation appears to be easy. An attack has to be approached locally. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1600 for this issue.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 56480 (Mac OS X 10.7.x < 10.7.2 Multiple Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family MacOS X Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 120219 (Apple Mac OS X Lion v10.7.4 and Security Update 2012-002 Not Installed (APPLE-SA-2012-05-09-1)).

Upgrading to version 10.7.0 eliminates this vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (70577) and Tenable (56480).
