Buffer overflow in the COM Internet Services and in the RPC over HTTP Proxy components for Microsoft Windows NT Server 4.0, NT 4.0 Terminal Server Edition, 2000, XP, and Server 2003 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service via a crafted request.

The weakness was disclosed 04/13/2004 with eEye Digital Security as MS04-012 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). The advisory is shared at microsoft.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2003-0807 since 09/18/2003. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1499 for this issue.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 12206 (MS04-012: Microsoft Hotfix (credentialed check) (828741)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 68528 (Multiple Microsoft Windows RPC/DCOM Vulnerabilities (MS04-012)).

Applying the patch MS04-012 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at windowsupdate.microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
