Wireshark up to 1.8.1 GSM RLC MAC Dissector packet-gsm_rlcmac.c dissect_gsm_rlcmac_downlink memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability has been found in Wireshark up to 1.8.1 (Packet Analyzer Software) and classified as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is the function dissect_gsm_rlcmac_downlink of the file epan/dissectors/packet-gsm_rlcmac.c of the component GSM RLC MAC Dissector. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect availability. The summary by CVE is:

Buffer overflow in the dissect_gsm_rlcmac_downlink function in epan/dissectors/packet-gsm_rlcmac.c in the GSM RLC MAC dissector in Wireshark 1.6.x before 1.6.10 and 1.8.x before 1.8.2 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a malformed packet.

The weakness was shared 08/15/2012 by Laurent Butti as wnpa-sec-2012-19 as not defined bulletin (Website) via wireshark.org. The advisory is shared at wireshark.org. The vendor cooperated in the coordination of the public release. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2012-4297 since 08/14/2012. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 803133 , which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 120909 (Solaris 11 Support Repository Update (SRU) 13.4 Missing).

Upgrading to version 1.8.2 or 1.6.10 eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at wireshark.org. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (77775) and Tenable (803133). The entries 5990, 5991, 5992 and 5993 are related to this item.
