Mozilla Firefox/Thunderbird 14 Object.defineProperty cross site scripting

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in Mozilla Firefox and Thunderbird 14 (Web Browser) and classified as critical. This issue affects the function Object.defineProperty. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a cross site scripting vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-79. The product does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes user-controllable input before it is placed in output that is used as a web page that is served to other users. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

Mozilla Firefox before 15.0, Thunderbird before 15.0, and SeaMonkey before 2.12 do not prevent use of the Object.defineProperty method to shadow the location object (aka window.location), which makes it easier for remote attackers to conduct cross-site scripting (XSS) attacks via vectors involving a plugin.

The weakness was presented 08/28/2012 by Mariusz Mlynski as MFSA 2012-59 as not defined advisory (Website). The advisory is shared at mozilla.org. The public release was coordinated in cooperation with Mozilla. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2012-1956 since 03/30/2012. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details as well as a private exploit are known. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1059.007 for this issue. This could be used to confuse the current location to plugins.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 68636 (Oracle Linux 6 : thunderbird (ELSA-2012-1351)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Oracle Linux Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 120583 (Red Hat Update for Xulrunner Firefox (RHSA-2012:1350)).

Upgrading to version 15 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at Tenable (68636). See 6036, 6035, 6039 and 6040 for similar entries.
