OpenJPEG 1.3/1.4 jp2.c memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in OpenJPEG 1.3/1.4 (Image Processing Software). It has been declared as very critical. Affected by this vulnerability is some unknown processing of the file jp2.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

The JPEG 2000 codec (jp2.c) in OpenJPEG before 1.5 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a crafted palette index in a CMAP record of a JPEG image, which triggers memory corruption, aka "out-of heap-based buffer write."

The weakness was disclosed 04/11/2012 as Bug 805912 as not defined bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is shared at bugzilla.redhat.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2012-1499 since 03/05/2012. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. The price for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 12/01/2021).

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 59634 (GLSA-201206-06 : OpenJPEG: User-assisted execution of arbitrary code), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Gentoo Local Security Checks.

Upgrading to version 1.4 eliminates this vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (74182) and Tenable (59634).
