The file-upload implementation in rfc1867.c in PHP before 5.4.0 does not properly handle invalid [ (open square bracket) characters in name values, which makes it easier for remote attackers to cause a denial of service (malformed $_FILES indexes) or conduct directory traversal attacks during multi-file uploads by leveraging a script that lacks its own filename restrictions.

The weakness was published 05/23/2012 (Website). The advisory is shared at svn.php.net. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2012-1172 since 02/14/2012. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.

Upgrading to version 5.1.0 eliminates this vulnerability.
